Cora Lynne’s Namesake

A few weeks ago, I had the honor of shooting maternity portraits for my gorgeous cousin, Ashley. I was in town for a wedding and my nephew’s fourth birthday, so we planned to squeeze in a session before the party. Of course, it started raining right before the shoot, so our outside time was cut short. My sister Leah proved to be very helpful in making everyone giggle and providing fresh perspectives. I always have funny behind the scenes shots from light tests. What a cluster!

Ashley is expecting her first little girl in May, and plans to name her Cora, after our great-grandmama Moorer. I was excited for an excuse to pull out my old photos and do a little research on Cora’s special namesake. I went to my aunt Donn-o (Ashley’s mom) first. She’s always happy to chat, and has a pretty substantial family history database. Grandmama Moorer was born sometime around the turn of the century, so It was difficult to find pictures from when she was young. Then I went to my mom for a text interview…(Mistake number one). She is perpetually loosing her reading glasses, so piecing together what she is trying to say is like reading another language. I got some mostly relevant stories and a good laugh, nonetheless!

I love hearing stories about my mom’s childhood. Apparently, mama had has a bad case of “middle child syndrome”, and spent the majority of her time causing trouble. She, Donna and Bobby, and all of their cousins used to go over to Grandmama Moorer’s house every Sunday after church. She’d make strawberry kool-aid and tea-cakes for all the kids. Her name was Cora Lorena Moorer. She had tan, native skin and a knack for gardening. There’s a big family reunion every year at Grandmama Moorer’s house. My aunt Donn-o makes everyone sit on the front porch steps for a picture. We’ll all thank her one day.

Family is very special to me, and I’m so glad Ashley asked me to be a part of Cora’s birth. Here’s to Ashley and Baby Cora, and our rich family history! I hope you enjoy our newest family keepsakes!
